"Look at you, you madman,
Screaming you are thirsty
And are dying in a desert
When all around you there is nothing but water!"
-- Kabir
There is but one instruction to give. There should be humanity in you. People of all countries should unite with each other as brothers. All of you must be happy and healthy and appreciate the joy of life. The highest thing in the world is karma-hard work. Idleness makes man lifeless.
Spread this message in your country-spread the light of righteousness to the hearts of others. Let the seed of human love and humanity which is in you flower and be fruitful. Organized powers are always stronger than individual ones. Let the message of this organization be spread in the whole world. The Vedas proclaim-"grow wise and learn; awake your countrymen."
Remove hatred and jealousy from the heart. The same thing has been repeatedly written in the Bible and spoken through Christ. Where there is jealousy and hatred, there is no religion. If there had been humanity in people, there would have been no necessity of making atom bombs. Years before, people would have left righting weapons.
All of you have sacrificed your body, mind and soul in increasing the beauty of Herakhan. In the making, in working here, all of you have invested your energy and have worked so hard and this Vishwa Mahadham is your soul. The structure of this place is now in all of you. You are responsible for the structure.

Standing on a packed train on the way home from university, I was feeling terrible. It had been a hard week, I was annoyed with several colleagues, the train had been delayed and everybody nearby seemed to be coughing and sneezing on me! In the rush to get onto the train people were barging each other and getting into heated arguments. I was feeling erratic, as if I would hit someone at the slightest provocation. As all this frustration and anger was swirling around in my head, I started thinking about what advice Hinduism could give me in a situation like this. I started contemplating advice that I had heard during lectures, or read from books. Recalling some helpful anecdotes from a talk I'd attended in the past, I felt better.
It quickly occurred to me that it wasn't justifiable for me to be so angry and frustrated. People die of starvation or lose their loved ones to terrorism, on an almost daily basis. By comparison, I had little to complain about. Then I thought about the concept of indwelling God, the idea that every person has a portion of the divine residing within him or her. Up until then I'd been growing increasingly annoyed at the people standing around me. But now I tried to think of God's presence in all of these people. Slowly my anger began to subside. Already I had come a long way towards restored sanity, the result of a few minutes of positive thinking.
In order to keep the threads that weave us together from fraying, we need to speak our truth and resolve conflicts within a container of caring. I am able to do this much more consistently when I remember the "Four Noble Truths. The wisdom of the four noble truths can be found in many cultures, but I'm sharing knowledge found in The Great Wheel of Life, an ancient circular symbol that has been used by native peoples for thousands of years, and augmented by anthropologist Angeles Arrien and me.
THE FOUR NOBLE TRUTHS:
1. SHOW UP and choose to be present to all that life offers. Be a good model--by walking your talk.
2. PAY ATTENTION to what has heart and meaning for you and resonates within your soul.
3. TELL THE TRUTH without blame or judgment. Say what you mean and mean what you say (indigenous peoples call this 'speaking with spirit-tongue') or KEEP NOBLE SILENCE. From an empowered position, choose to remain silent.
4. STAY OPEN, BUT NOT ATTACHED, TO THE OUTCOME. Deeply care, from an objective place. Break old patterns. Practice discernment.
If we did nothing else but adopt and live these four wonderful truths, our spirits would soar to new heights and our relationships would be healthy and holy. Remembering that the bottom line needs to be drawn with love, we can choose to speak with spirit-tongue or maintain a noble silence.
"I never speak with the intention of hurting."
"I honor my truth and speak it caringly."
When you have lived an experience that helps you understand, in an exaggerated way, the very thing you do not want, you also understand, in an exaggerated way, what you DO want. But when you are painfully aware of what you do NOT want, you are not in alignment with what you DO want. When you desire something that you do not believe is possible, you are not in alignment. When there is something that you want and you are feeling unhappy that you do not have it, you are not in alignment. When you see someone who currently has the very thing that you desire and you feel jealous, you are not in alignment.
Regarding your creation of your own life experience, there really is only one important question for you to ask: How can I bring myself into vibrational alignment with the desires that my experience has produced? And the answer is simple: Pay attention to the way you feel, and deliberately choose thoughts - about everything - that feel good to you when you think them.

When you are waiting for something to occur, you are not focused on what is occurring now. That does not mean that you should not be in excited expectancy of another Now or a future probability. In fact, it is very good to, in a way, project into that future Now or future probability and be in the joy, if you like, of that anticipation. But be aware of what you are doing and bring the focus back into the Now, saying, "How am I being in the fullness of this moment?" or, "What am I not focusing on that would enhance this Now? What is the more that I can be in gratitude for?"

WASHINGTON - Children who switched their diets for only a few days to organic foods dramatically and immediately lowered the amount of toxic pesticides in their bodies, researchers report.
Lead author Chensheng Lu of Emory University found that when kids eat organic foods, pesticides in their body plummet to undetectable levels --even when following the diet for only five days.
"An organic diet does provide protective measures for pesticide exposure in kids," said Lu, who presented his research at a panel at the American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in St. Louis. His study appeared in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives.
Lu designed a novel intervention study by substituting organic foods into the diets of 23 elementary school children in the Seattle area. All the kids, who were aged 3 to 11, had metabolites -- or evidence of pesticides --in their urine at the study's start. But as soon as they began eating organic foods, the concentration of metabolites dropped to essentially zero. Once they returned to their conventional diet, the pesticides levels bounced back up.
The parents were given shopping lists to buy organic vegetables, fruits and juices, as well as wheat and corn products. Meat and dairy products were left out, Lu said, because these foods don't usually have pesticide residues. The parents fed their children organic foods for five consecutive days during a 15-day study period. The researchers evaluated the kids four times over the course of a year by analyzing their urine and saliva.
Lu said he is confident that the pesticide reductions can be attributed to the kids' diet, because the particular class of pesticides studied, called organophosphorus pesticides, or OPs, are not found in households. The kids ingested these pesticides from eating conventional foods, and not from playing in grass treated with chemicals, for example.
Although this study to some degree proves the obvious -- pesticide-free foods create pesticide-free children -- co-author Richard Fenske at the University of Washington says he was impressed by the magnitude of difference in the results.
So should parents be worried?
Lu and Fenske claim the health risks to children are still uncertain, although Lu points out that there's no getting around the fact a pesticide is a neurotoxin. Since the chemicals disrupt enzymes in the brain which govern communication, exposure to pesticides could damage a child's brain. These chemicals are developed, after all, to kill bugs by paralyzing or over-exciting their neurological systems.
"In terms of the impact of these low levels of chemicals on a regular basis in a developing organism -- and that's what a child's neurological system is -- this is extremely important that we try to understand this," Fenske said.
The Environmental Protection Agency warns children may be sensitive to pesticides because their excretory systems are not developed enough to excrete pesticides, and that in relation to their body weight, kids eat and drink more than adults.
Currently, researchers are studying whether conditions like attention deficit disorder, lowered IQs, Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease can be linked to early exposure to pesticides. Children are most vulnerable to pesticides from formation of the fetus up to 2 years of age.
Charles Benbrook, the chief scientist of The Organic Center, a Rhode Island-based nonprofit encouraging the widespread adoption of organic foods and processes, says there's enough consensus to act now to rid agriculture of pesticides. He mentioned the work of Robin Whyatt at Columbia University with pregnant women in New York. Whyatt found that birth weight and birth length is lower in children whose mothers were exposed to pesticides.
Benbrook said he was amazed at how fast and how significantly the urinary metabolites fell in Lu's study participants.
"This is very encouraging. What it says is this point is bigger than the debate about organics. If farmers were to change how they managed pests for six or eight crops, we could essentially eliminate most of pesticide exposure and take this risk factor out of equation," he said.
Lu emphasized children also get exposed in other outlets, for example around the home or in public sports fields, where pesticides are often over sprayed.
"You have to accept the fact a farmer needs to use pesticides to have healthy crops for harvest, but is it really necessary for parents to use pesticides around the home?" he asked.
Overall, parents should be aware of how their kids could be in contact with pesticides, Lu said. Since organics tend to cost more than conventional foods, parents don't need to go 100 percent organic to get protective benefits, he said. He recommends checking out
, which provides a list of foods and their pesticide risk.
"The message of this paper is not to scare parents from eating conventional diets, but it's for them to think about pesticide exposure as a whole, and how to minimize the exposure. Diet is not necessarily the only answer," Lu said.
"In times of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act".

Get Tested!
Mercury is toxic. Get tested!
The Sierra Club is co-sponsoring a project to raise awareness about the dangers of mercury pollution. For the non-profit rate of $25, you can order a testing kit to find out how much mercury you have in your body. We can offer these kits at such a low rate because we charge only enough to cover the cost of materials and the lab-processing fees.
The test involves snipping a small sample of your hair and sending it to an academic laboratory, the Environmental Quality Institute at the University of North Carolina-Asheville, which will process the results. The kit includes a cardboard scale to measure your hair sample size, plastic gloves, postage-paid and pre-addressed envelopes to submit the sample, and detailed instructions that help guide you through the testing process.
Your data will also be added anonymously to a UNC research study, which will have the largest sample size of any study to date, on the effects of mercury in the U.S. population.
When you receive your results, you will also get information about what you can do to reduce your exposure to mercury.

"The whole experience was transformative for me in every way. I have prayed for this state of being for years and know it is a permanent state. Linda C., Teacher, Texas
I watched intently as my little brother was caught in the act. He sat in the corner of the living room, a pen in one hand and my father's brand-new hymnbook in the other.
As my father walked into the room, my brother cowered slightly; he sensed that he had done something wrong. From a distance I could see that he had opened my father's new hymnal and scribbled in it the length and breadth of the first page with a pen.
Now, staring at my father fearfully, he and I both waited for his punishment. And as we waited, there was no way we could have known that our father was about to teach us deep and lasting lessons about life and family, lessons that continue to become even clearer through the years.
My father picked up his prized hymnal, looked at it carefully, and then sat down, without saying a word. Books were precious to him; he was a clergyman and the holder of several degrees. For him, books were knowledge, and yet he loved his children.
What he did next was remarkable. Instead of punishing my brother, instead of scolding or yelling or reprimanding, he sat down, took the pen from my brother's hand, and then wrote in the book himself, alongside the scribbles John had made:
John's work, 1959, age 2. How many times have I looked into your beautiful face and into your warm, alert eyes looking up at me and thanked God for the one who has now scribbled in my new hymnal. You have made the book sacred, as have your brothers and sister to so much of my life.
"Wow," I thought. "This is punishment?"
The years and the books came and went. Our family experienced what all families go through and perhaps a little bit more: triumph and tragedy, prosperity and loss, laughter and tears. We gained grandchildren, we lost a son. We always knew our parents loved us and that one of the proofs of their love was the hymnal by the piano.
From time to time we would open it, look at the scribbles, read my father's _expression of unconditional love, and feel uplifted. Now I know that through this simple act my father taught us how every event in life has a positive side - if we are prepared to look at it from another perspective - and how precious it is when our lives are touched by little hands.
But he also taught us about what really matters in life: people, not objects; tolerance, not judgment; love, not anger. Now I, too, am a father, and, like my dad, a clergyman and holder of degrees. But unlike my father, I do not wait for my daughters to secretly take books from my bookshelf and scribble in them. From time to time I take one down - not just a cheap paperback but a book that I know I will have for many years to come, and I give it to one of my children to scribble or write their names in.
And as I look at their artwork, I think about my father, the lessons he taught me, the love he has for us and which I have for my children - love that is at the very heart of a family.
I think about these things and I smile. Then I whisper, "Thank you, Dad."
